FinAid, USA

Get Chitika Premium About FinAid

FinAid was established in the fall of 1994 as a public service. This award-winning site has grown into the most comprehensive source of student financial aid information, advice and tools -- on or off the web.

Access to FinAid is free for all users and there is no charge to link to the site.

FinAid has earned a stellar reputation in the educational community as the best web site of its kind. It's comprehensive, it's informative, it's objective -- and it's the first stop on the web for students looking for ways to finance their education.

Every major newspaper and personal finance magazine in the country has reviewed the site. The New York Daily News called FinAid "the hottest site on the Internet for financial aid tips." It is "the best place to begin a search" according to the Chicago Sun-Times, and "the grand-daddy of all Web sites" according to the Boston Globe. Yahoo Internet Life said to "make FinAid your first stop. This site offers some of the best 'how to' guidance on securing financial aid."

The site has won awards from the College Board, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students and the American Institute for Public Service.

Mark Kantrowitz, Publisher

FinAid was created by Mark Kantrowitz, a noted financial aid and college planning author. Mark is also Publisher of FastWeb, the largest and most popular free scholarship matching service. Previously, he was a Research Scientist at Just Research, the US software laboratory for Justsystem Corporation of Japan. Mark has earned the praise of numerous college administrators, journalists and students and families for his dedicated work on the FinAid site; also, not surprisingly, he managed to fund his own schooling without spending a single cent of his parents' money.

As a nationally-recognized financial aid expert, Mark has been called to testify before Congress about student aid on several occasions. He is interviewed regularly by news outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, MSN, CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, CNBC, Bloomberg, Money Magazine, SmartMoney, Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, US News & World Report, Newsweek, Bankrate.com, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Chronicle of Higher Education, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Washington Post, Reuters and the Associated Press.

Mark is on the editorial board of the Council on Law in Higher Education, the editorial advisory board of Bottom Line/Wealth (a Boardroom, Inc. publication), and the board of directors of the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA) and is the Student Loan Guru for FiLife.com (a Dow Jones property).

Mark is the author of four books, including two about student aid. His most recent book, FastWeb College Gold, was published by Harper Collins in September 2006 and is a step-by-step guide to paying for college. He also holds six patents, with several more patent applications still pending.

Mark has two children (one biological and one adopted), two cats and four dogs. In his spare time, Mark folds origami models, repairs antique battery-operated toys and creates stained glass windows. He enjoys sampling gourmet chocolate. Mark was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer a few weeks after the birth of his son, and is currently disease-free after undergoing chemotherapy, an orchiectomy and a cholecystectomy. He shares practical cancer tips with cancer patients and survivors through CancerPoints.com. Mark is also a survivor of a direct lightning strike on his home.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Get Chitika Premium Our work begins with Bill and Melinda Gates’ belief that all lives have equal value. We think all people deserve the chance to have healthy, productive lives. Our approach to giving is driven by the foundation’s guiding principles.

Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett set our overarching grantmaking priorities—such as improving health and reducing extreme poverty in the developing world and improving high school education in the United States. They establish high-level goals for our grantmaking programs. Then our three program teams devise a strategy for meeting these goals.

We have been developing a grantmaking process that helps us decide how to spend our time, effort, and money so we can accomplish that goal for as many people as possible. This process helps us choose the issues we will work on and the groups to which we will make grants.

We do not pretend that this process is unique to us. We also recognize that we don’t always follow this process to the letter with every grant; in some cases it represents our aspirations as much as reality. Our process is evolving as we get better at choosing strategies, making grants, measuring progress towards impact, and evaluating the results. We are committed to reporting what we are learning at key stages during the grantmaking process.

While our grantmaking procedures may vary slightly, our basic process can be broken into four key stages: develop strategy, make grants, measure progress, and adjust strategy.

Children's Charity Fund, Inc

Get Chitika Premium Celebrating 17 years

C C F has worked very hard in helping children around the U.S. We use Professional Fundraising companies that help us reach our goal.  The fundraising fees that we incur may seem high to some, but behind the scenes, these companies work just as hard as we do. They are responsible for much more than the average person would think.

I, as Founder of the organization, have taken full responsibility for the organization and the way the organization performs. In approx 2002, due to health problems, I was forced to retire. I am still President of the organization, but as a volunteer. When I started this organization, my family noticed the time I was putting in so they decided to help me in many ways. Now my wife is the Executive Director and my daughter is Director of our Fundraising endeavors.  Neither my Wife or daughter are on the Board of Directors.

Some people tend to get upset when they find out we are not up to each and every  standard of certain reporting agencies, and the fact that we use paid fundraisers. I do not measure our success on the quantity of children helped. Rather, I like to focus on the quality of life each child has since we have helped them.  We are a member of the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.

In 1991 when I started this organization I was surprised of what I learned. The following is not free: telephone, rent and utilities, office supplies, mailing, vehicles, travel expenses, banking fees, accountants, legal fees, insurance, and registrations. I could mention more but I'm sure you get the Idea. We try to keep our expenses to a minimum, but it is obviously hard to do. My wife and daughter work 6 days a week clocking in 65 hrs each. They are paid a weekly salary as any one would expect. But what you don't expect is that for approx 5 years they worked with no salary. They believed in what I believed in and that is to cut the RED TAPE and help the children who need it. Who could understand a family in need better than a family willing to help?

I want this organization to continue helping children as we have in the past 17 years. We want people who care about children, such as yourself, so that we can continue to help.

The Board of Directors for C C F have devoted themselves in this cause for children. They are a very important part of the organization and it's functions that help the children. Our Board members are all different, a hospital worker, a mortgage broker, and an insurance agent. Without them I don't think we would have been able to continue. I personally would like to Thank them for all the work they do and how they keep me going. It's all for one cause...THE CHILDREN.

Thank You in Advance
Kenneth C Bowron Sr.
